When she becomes stranded on an unknown island, feisty fourteen-year-old Milo Hestler accidentally gets engaged to the boy who rescues her. Being a girl of high principles and plenty of attitude, she is furious, believing that she is far to young to be involved in something as profound and serious as marriage. Not to mention, her new fiance is virtually a stranger and they don't even speak the same language!
However, despite her strenuous objections, an interpreter on the island informs her that this place is ruled by laws that can't and won't be broken. Whether she likes it or not, she will marry this boy, this Simon Swallow, and if force is required, then so be it.
Outraged and totally alone except for her one friend, her conscience, whom she talks to and has named Bob the Conscience, Milo has no choice but to go through with it. Her anger over the situation turns into hatred for Simon, the boy who tricked her into the whole thing, clashing against his obvious love for her.
This doesn't matter to Milo, however. If she's going to be miserable, then you better believe that he will be.
