Derek Bradley is just like any other Yorkshire lad growing up in the 1960s – unique. Through his blunt but honest eyes and ears we share what it’s like to celebrate (not that he’d use that word) Christmas in a small Yorkshire village.

The advent calendar in the Bradley household is full of adventures, and Northern humour - Derek’s first crack at carol singing ends with his first Christmas kiss. Dad’s lost wage packet means a lean year-end, until one tiny law is quietly broken and when he can’t find holly a ghost comes to the rescue. Derek’s chosen to play Joseph in the school nativity play, where all is not calm but it’s certainly bright. . . in frosty bedrooms, damp village halls, and even Santa’s Grotto in the CO-OP. The magic of Christmas is everywhere, until Derek’s granddad tries conjuring at the dinner table – his granny makes the Bristol Cream disappear but granddad’s left with indoor fireworks!
