Based on a true story this novel is about a man who had an undying love for his country, and all he loved more than his country was a woman. Although the object of his deepest love was another man's wife, this manbecause he was smitten as few men have ever beencould not live without her. He treated her as his own wife and lived with her on the sly for nearly ten years. This man was not just any man. He was a powerful man, a man adored by the people of his country. His country was Ireland, and there were many who asserted that the man wore no crown but was for all practical purposes a de facto king. His people repeatedly elected him to the British Parliament to fight in London for the Irish cause of home rule and fair rents for tenants, but scandal and death ended his struggle.

It was in England that this man, Samuel Gaines Atherton, met Mrs. Daniel O'Hara and was immediately drawn to her so completely that he could never let go of her, not even if it meant losing his power over the country whose causes he championed as only a few had before him. He would die not knowing that his beloved, through her son and grandson, would continue the battle and win what he could not. Their story ends in triumph, but also tragedy.
